Here’s Sartak, a sannyasin monk. He loves to chat! I think he’s amused with my iPad mini!
Didn’t know I could do the splits (hanuman asana) until I tried it here for the 1st time.
In terms of physical ability, I’ve noticed more flexibility in the backbends and some twisting poses. But because of the intense bending, I’ve lost flexibility in simple forward bending poses. My attempt at a favourite pose..
Yesterday, Maria and I went to an Ayurvedic doctor regarding the localized pain in the lower back. She said the reason it’s not felt with regular movement is because there is some inflammation in the deeper layers. She suggested a 20 minute massage that we both were thrilled for. Her assistants did the treatment. When taken into the room, my eyes fell upon the uterus cover. I thought there won’t be need for that again, and that I can just have to lift my shirt so she can massage the area in question. But no, this time madam wanted everything off from earrings to anklet. I hesitated and told her its just ‘this part’ and pointed to my sore vertebrae. Since she didn’t speak English and was determined, I gave up. So, then I was asked to sit on a chair. She placed her hands on my head, parted my hair and drizzled a warm stream of coconut oil. She started massaging from the front of the head, while occasionally pulling layers up and using more oil. Not sure how this fixes my back pain but oooohhh heaven! She offered a face massage but I thought this was milking it, besides Maria will be waiting for me so we can hurry back to catch our 4:30pm class. Well then came the massage. An all body massage for an area no more than 1 square inch! I had to continuously tell myself to chill and enjoy since this was taking way more than 20 minutes. Five minutes of steam came next…the box that has this guillotine cover. During the shower, which is done by myself thankfully, came the knock I was waiting for. Hurry up madam, it’s 4 o clock. Got prescribed some herbal painkillers for the backpain and left…with doubt and a bit of disappointment that this 1.5 hrs did anything to help. I did my asanas beautifully and slept like a rock last night. My pain is not as intense today!
the massage sounds good to me! glad your back is less sore. mom

Perhaps you just neened a good nights rest. When my lower back bothers me, I sleep on my side with my knees up. Laying on my back just agravates it. In the morning the back feels great. We put too much emphasis on the back-bends. They must be balanced with equal forward bends. But you know that. 🙂
BTW I'm absolutely loving teaching all these extra yoga classes while you're away. I don't think I want to hand them back! LOL!

You have a body to do yoga!
I had exactly the same steps of massage you experienced plus Shirodara in Cherai 🙂
I have to say Bhooma gave us a well-balanced practice with counterposes which were necessary for the intense poses.
Om Shanti,
Le xx

Careful Todd, I may hold you to that! 🙂

I must certainly have the butt…it gets an occasional slap from a couple of the women!
The practice is very balanced with counter poses. The backbends, esp. with the advanced arm position in natarajasana, is the culprit.
Can't wait to try shirodhara!

They use so much coconut oil it reminds me of being rubbed down in Trinidad.
